The cerebellum lies as the bottom of the brain, in a cavity of the skull known as the posterior fossa.  It is separated from the upper portion of the brain by a firm membrane known as the tentorium.  The cerebellum contains two hemispheres (one on each side) and a midline structure known as the vermis (from the word worm).  The cerebellum is responsible for the smoothness and coordination of movement.
